Here are frequently asked questions (FAQ) for our GST/ HST filing service.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) are value-added taxes applied to most goods and services sold in Canada. Businesses with annual taxable sales exceeding $30,000 must register for and carry out  GST/HST filings.

You’ll need sales records, GST/HST collected, purchase and expense records, and any input tax credits you wish to claim. Our team will guide you through the documentation process to ensure nothing is missed.

The 9 digit HST number is identical to the Federal Business Number (BN) that the Revenue Canada Agency issues to Canadian corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. A HST number has RT0001 at the end. Each and every invoice needs to include the HST number in the GST/HST filings.

  • To file HST in Ontario, begin by determining your filing frequency—monthly, quarterly, or annually—based on your annual taxable revenue.
  • Gather all relevant records, including sales data, HST collected, and business expenses with input tax credits.
  • Calculate your net tax by subtracting input tax credits from the HST collected.
  • Carry out your GST/HST filings electronically via the CRA’s My Business Account or NETFILE-certified software for efficiency, or use paper forms if preferred.
  • Ensure any payments owed are submitted by the due date to avoid penalties and retain records for at least six years for compliance and audit purposes.

To obtain an HST number in Ontario, you need to register for a Business Number (BN) with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You can do this online through the CRA’s Business Registration Online (BRO) service, by calling the CRA at 1-800-959-5525, or by submitting Form RC1, Request for a Business Number, via mail. During the registration process, you’ll provide information about your business, such as its legal name, business activities, and expected taxable sales. Once registered, your HST number will be issued as part of your Business Number, allowing you to collect HST on your sales and carry out your GST/HST filings.

For Ontario, HST rate is 13%. For Quebec, it is 14.975%.
