Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announces maximum CPP contributions for 2025
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has officially announced the updated maximum contributions for the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) for 2025. This adjustment reflects changes to the Yearly Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) and is designed to ensure that the CPP remains sustainable and supports Canadians in their retirement years.
The annual adjustments to CPP contributions reflect Canada’s commitment to strengthening the financial well-being of retirees. By staying informed and preparing for these changes, Canadians can better navigate their financial future while contributing to a sustainable pension system.
Year’s Additional Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YAMPE)
The Year’s Additional Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YAMPE), a second earnings ceiling, was implemented in 2024. The second additional Canada Pension Plan contributions (CPP2) are calculated using the YAMPE. The Year’s Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) in 2024 is about 7% lower than the YAMPE. The YAMPE will be about 14% higher than the YMPE in 2025 and each year thereafter.
- If you earn income up to the YMPE, you must contribute a portion to the CPP.
- Earnings above the YMPE are not subject to CPP contributions (unless considering the additional YAMPE for CPP2, as introduced in 2024).
The amounts are determined in compliance with the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) laws and account for increases in the country’s average weekly wages and salaries. The final year of the Canada Pension Plan enhancement’s legislative updates is 2025.
For example, if the YMPE for a given year is $68,500, CPP contributions would only apply to earnings up to this threshold. Any earnings above that level would not incur standard CPP contributions.
CPP Contribution Rates & Amounts for 2025
- In 2024, the yearly maximum pensionable earnings (YMPE) was $68,500; in 2025, it will be $71,300.00. In 2025, the $3,500.00 basic exemption amount will not change.
- In 2025, the employer and employee CPP contribution rates will both stay at 5.95%, and the maximum contribution will be $4,034.10, up from $3,867.50 in 2024.

CPP2 Contribution Rates & Amounts for 2025
- Compared to 2024, when it was $73,200.00, the 2025 YAMPE will be $81,200.00. Pensionable incomes between $71,300.00 and $81,200.00 must be paid into CPP2.

Next Steps for Employers and Individuals
Update payroll systems to reflect the new YMPE and contribution rates.
Communicate these changes to employees to ensure they understand their impact on take-home pay.
Self-employed individuals should plan ahead for the increased contribution requirements when budgeting for 2025.
The CPP remains a cornerstone of retirement income for many Canadians. These contribution adjustments are part of the CPP enhancement plan, introduced to ensure that future retirees receive increased benefits over time. Under this plan, CPP will replace a higher portion of pre-retirement income for Canadians, providing greater financial security in retirement.
